A new bug has been detected in iOS which causes Restart on the iPhone simply with an SMS containing a series of special characters !

The recipient of the SMS or iMessage will see their iPhone Respring and then Reboot , unfortunately without being able to intervene.

After the Reboot and if Message.app is opened in the chat list the app crashes again automatically causing the iPhone to Reboot again.

If the Message.app is opened in the SMS/iMessage itself the iPhone will not crash - at least for the moment - however in case the user tries to change the conversation in the application we have a Respring again and then a Reboot.

This annoying bug is expected to be fixed immediately by Apple, however, since the phenomenon has started to reach epidemic proportions, here is a temporary solution until the bug is officially fixed :

  • Open Notes.app (notes app)
  • Create a new note (anything you want eg 12345)
  • Save the note
  • Using the share icon (bottom center of the screen) send the note as an SMS to a phone number.
  • After sending the note, you'll be able to open Messages.app again.

The characters that cause iPhone Reboot:
