Rumors surrounding the HealthBook app , Apple's long-awaited app that will collect and organize user health information, have been rife on the internet for months:

According to a report by 9to5Mac, Apple is preparing a new app for iOS 8 that will collect and organize information about the user's health, including statistics provided by the M7 coprocessor of the iPhone 5S. The focus is on the fact that this application, called Healthbook, will be based very heavily on the infamous iWatch .

Healthbook will probably remind you of Passbook . And not by chance since the environment is said to be similar. Each card will represent an element: how many steps the user has taken, total kilometers traveled, calories, etc. It will also contain information about glucose levels, heart rate, blood pressure, hydration levels and more provided by the sensors on the iWatch.

Today, however, we have the pleasure to present to you ( Mark Gruman9to5mac ) the first screenshots of the application that we will see in iOS 8 !

HealthBook iPhone app

As we can see in the screenshots, each function category has its own card in the application (bloodwork, heart rate, hydration, blood pressure, physical activity, nutrition, blood sugar, sleep, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, weight).

Fitness

Three of the Healthbook categories are dedicated to “Fitness tracking”: Activity, Weight and Nutrition.

HealthBook iOS 8 app cards

In the Activity tab, we will be able to see the recorded steps , the calories consumed and the total Miles (or Km) we have traveled by periods (Day, Week, Month, Year).

The Weight tab, after the user has entered their weight and height, displays data regarding the user's weight , Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage .

As we notice, both the 2 tabs use graphs for easier data presentation.

The Nutrition tab helps to maintain a healthy diet as there the user can enter his diet so that it is available to him at all times.

Heart Rate – Blood Pressure

Perhaps the most popular metrics one looks for in a fitband or training watch are heart rate (in beats per minute) and blood pressure (diastolic & systolic). HealthBook has 2 tabs where all these measurements will be recorded and presented.

Bloodwork – Oxygen Saturation – Blood Sugar

The specific blood measurement/recording capabilities are currently covered in a veil of fog, but the existence of the relevant tabs holds a lot of promise especially for patients with liver, kidney & heart problems who need to constantly monitor the levels of various markers through blood tests .

The existence of the Blood Sugar tab is particularly important, as the application will be able to record blood glucose levels !

Hydration – Respiratory Rate

The Hydration tab helps the user to determine how hydrated their body is in order to avoid the possibility of dehydration .

The Respiratory rate tab refers to the number of breaths the user takes per minute .

Sleep

Another useful statistical data that we will be able to see through HealthBook, is the quality of our sleep. The app records our sleep cycles/phases, and possibly works with the alarm clock to help us wake up in a "light sleep phase".

When we wake up during the "deep sleep phase", we feel that we have not slept enough and we are overwhelmed by a feeling of exhaustion that follows us for many hours during the day, until our body fully recovers.

On the contrary, waking up in a "light sleep phase" we feel refreshed and "full from sleep", with much more energy at our disposal.

Emergency Card

This tab holds general data such as name, age, weight, height, blood type as well as information regarding critical information about the user's health. The purpose of this data is to constitute a "file" of the user in the event that an emergency incident immediately requires information about the victim and the victim is unable to speak.

In addition, the user will be able to declare a contact who will be informed immediately in the event of a critical incident. Maybe a shortcut will be added to the iPhone screen of iOS 8 to call the contact directly. (We wish the OS itself could automatically notify the contact via SMS if any of the vitals the HealthBook records drops below a certain threshold, but that's not something that's in the early leaks).

iWatch?

All this is fine but where will the measurements that will be recorded in the Healthbook come from?

The iPhone 5S with the M7 motion co-processor is a good base to further develop the sensor technology we expect in the iPhone 6. But is that enough or should we also see the release of an iWatch, either as a smartwatch or as a "simple" fitband whose purpose will be to measure and send the data to the Healthbook?

Based on what we saw today but also knowing at least part of the collaborations that Apple has made with experts in the field of fitness and health, we can only bet that 2014 will be the year of the Healthbook and the iWatch !

Big thanks to Mark Gurman for another exclusive leak!
